Worcester BBQ

The tail end of the always-popular Restaurant Week illustrates once again how many terrific dining destinations there are in and around Worcester; little wonder, then, that “foodies” are often in a quandary as to where to head for a great meal at noontime or at night. The choices are mind-boggling! Now, add barbecue to the mix.

With the opening of Smokestack Urban Barbecue in the former Castellana’s on Harding St. in the Canal District earlier this year, Worcester boasts at least two establishments that have barbecue fare as their main focus. The other, Churrascaria Brazilian B.B.Q. on Grafton St. at Billings Square, is celebrating nearly four years in business under the skilled direction of Chef Jackson Muller and his family.

“Things are going better than we expected” after just one month in existence, Smokestack Urban Barbecue’s Bonnie Alrymple told Inside Worcester. “It’s definitely a casual environment, with country music, a fun atmosphere, and a lot to choose from.” This plethora of possibilities includes such enticing offerings as fried pickles, frozen hurricanes famous at Mardi Gras time and fried oysters.

Smokestack Urban Barbecue is getting a bump too from historical wagon tours of the Canal District run from its parking lot on Thursday nights during the summer.

Rotisserie-grilled meats done on skewers are a staple at Churrascaria Brazilian B.B.Q., where Chef Jackson Muller is putting into good use the experience he has gained in the industry–particularly the time he spent working at a restaurant in Allston prior to launching Churrascaria.

Appetizers, chicken, pork, beef and fish dishes and “Ranch Cantina’s” entrees, sides and desserts are a staple at Churrascaria Brazilian B.B.Q.. Like Smokestack Urban Barbecue, Churrascaria Brazilian B.B.Q. boasts a full liquor license. “Sunday is my busiest day,” Muller said recently.

Churrascaria Brazilian B.B.Q. is participating in the upcoming Brazilian Expo at the DCU Center. The Expo, scheduled for September 18 and 19 at the DCU Center, is being billed as “the largest Brazilian business event in all of New England.”
